The Christmas Shoes Song Lyrics: A Holiday Classic that Will Make You Cry

The song recounts the events experienced by a narrator completing the last of his gift shopping on Christmas Eve. He is waiting in a checkout line but is "not really in the Christmas mood" when he notices a young boy in front of him who wants to buy a pair of shoes for his terminally-ill mother: the boy tells the cashier he wants her to appear beautiful when she meets Jesus. Since he is short on money, the narrator ends up paying for the shoes, which reminds him of the true meaning of Christmas.

When asked about his individual fingerprints on the song itself, this is where the songwriters began to gather momentum in fleshing out the lyrics. When DC wrote down the bridge of the song, the group knew they were on to something special.

The 15 minutes of fame was certainly an added bonus for DC, but in discussing the song with Tuscaloosa Patch during the holiday season, he reflected on the message he wanted the public to take away from the lyrics. This comes at a time of runaway inflation, a bloody war in Europe, a resurgence in the COVID-19 pandemic and a crippling sense of dread for many across the globe.

The Christmas ShoesIt was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another lineTryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas moodStanding right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiouslyPacing 'round like little boys doAnd in his hands he held a pair of shoesHis clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toeAnd when it came his time to payI couldn't believe what I heard him say[Chorus:]Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, pleaseIt's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her sizeCould you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much timeYou see she's been sick for quite a whileAnd I know these shoes would make her smileAnd I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonightHe counted pennies for what seemed like yearsThen the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"He searched his pockets franticallyThen he turned and he looked at meHe said Mama made Christmas good at our house Though most years she just did withoutTell me Sir, what am I going to do,Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoesSo I laid the money down, I just had to help him outI'll never forget the look on his face when he saidMama's gonna look so greatSir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, pleaseIt's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her sizeCould you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much timeYou see she's been sick for quite a whileAnd I know these shoes would make her smileAnd I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight[Bridge:]I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's loveAs he thanked me and ran outI knew that God had sent that little boyTo remind me just what Christmas is all about.Sung by Bob Carlisle, the song "The Christmas Shoes" is a touching song making us realize the true essence of Christianity. St. Louis radio personality DC Chymes first read on the internet about a little boy trying to buy shoes for his dying mother. When he was unable to pay at the register, a kind stranger provided the rest of the money so that the son could go home with the gift. DC thought it would make a great song so he took it to NewSong's Eddie Carswell and Leonard Ahlstrom.

It was almost christmas timeThere I stood in another lineTryin to buy that last gift or twoNot really in the christmas moodStanding right in front of meWas a little boy waiting anxiouslyPacing around like little boys doAnd in his hand he heldA pair of shoes

Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my momma pleaseIts christmas eve and these shoes are just her sizeCould you hurry sir?Daddy says there's not much timeYou see she's been sick for quite a whileAnd I know these shoes will make her smileAnd I want her to look beautifulIf momma meets jesus tonight

According to Reynolds, the worst offender is the little-known "The Christmas Shoes" by a Christian group called Newsong. It is about a man who hates Christmas and comes across a small boy who wants to buy some shoes for his dying mother but doesn't have enough money. The man gives it to him and instantly feels better. 2ff7e9595c
